  • Looking Trashy

    Garbage
    D e s t r o y i n g
    Earth

This is a Brevette poem. This form was created by Emily Romano and consists of 3 words. The first is a noun (the subject) followed by a verb that shows on going action by spacing the letters and ends with a noun as the object. That is it - there are no other rules for this form. Short and sweet thus the name Brevette!

Saturday was Earth Day. Sparky and I attended an event nearby to pick up trash. It wasn't just a cleanup but instead was a CITO event - that is Cache-In-Trash-Out. It is something geocachers have been doing for awhile now. You see geocaching takes you to places that are a bit off the beaten track but usually not so far out of the way that some litterbugs haven't already been there and left their mark. So on Saturday, armed with trash bags and work gloves (and walking sticks and GPS) we fanned out across a park and picked up trash. We found lots of stuff - A nearly full bottle of Jose Cuervo, a medical boot, car floor mat, cans and bottles, cigarette packages and butts, fast food wrappers, Starbucks cups, several dirty diapers, fishing line, and my favorite - a plastic bag of dog poo. We filled probably 30 trash bags. And then we had a potluck lunch before heading out to grab 4 new caches. This is a photo of our little group of cachers - GeoCats and EcoWarriors all rolled into one! The photo was taken by the nature writer for the SB Tribune... maybe we'll make it into the newspaper!

  • Yay for you! What a great idea!

  • That's a really happy looking group on Earth Day! Glad you had such fun trashing and caching!

    • Thanks Janet! The event was a fun one and we really did make a difference in the park. It is a county park and they don't get the funding they really need... We not only picked up trash but we pulled up some invasive plants too (mustard onion plant)!

  • @murisopsis: Mustard onion plant -- that's a new one for me! We have lots of black mustard over the hillsides -- the spring greens melt into mustard yellow, and now even that is losing its color. For many years, the seeds of this mustard were sprayed (from planes/helicopters) on land that had been burned in wildflowers, to keep the earth in place. You can't get rid of it!

    • This is an invasive species - the plants produce hundreds of seeds and spread like wild fire. They aren't trying to eradicate it but rather just keep it under control!!

  • I am not an earth day person but cleaning up trash sounds like a good idea! I don't ever understand people who just throw their trash anywhere. It's rude. Thanks for cleaning up after them. :)

    • It is amazing what people will toss. The worst areas were right off the parking lots within 20 feet of a trash barrel!

  • I get upset when I see trash on our beaches or when hiking in the woods. Some people are selfish, and lazy. they should just carry it to the next trash can, but unfortunately, once one does it, others often view that as an acceptable area to also toss their trash and it builds up. I am glad for Earth day, and for those that take part in events.
My mother used to always have us bring a small bag to collect trash on our walks when she was a girl scout leader. The bonus was when we picked up cans because up north we could turn them in for 5cents apiece, which adds up, especially for young girls without a job yet.

    • I had initially thought we'd have a bag just for the recycling but there was so much stuff that we ended up filling all the bags plus some!
