  • Looking Bra-less

I had to toss out a bra. It is always sad when a good bra finally gives up and you have to replace it. It is doubly so when a good bra goes bad. Bad, as in turns evil and hurts you. My throwing away the bra was a mercy killing. It was the same kind of situation as Old Yeller. A good and faithful bra had a dangerous and fatal condition. I thought something had gone wrong when I put it on in the morning. It just didn't feel right. So I adjusted the straps and got dressed. Midway through the day I started having a sharp pain in my ribs on the left side. It only happened when I took a deep breath. I put my hand to my ribs thinking I might be having some medical emergency only to discover that my underwire had broken in half. The wire was trying to poke its way into my chest cavity, no doubt in an effort to collapse a lung and skewer my heart. I was forced to retreat to the locker room and attempt to remove the wire. I couldn't get the wire out of the bra and I couldn't wear the bra with the broken (and sharp) wire. I had to go bra-less. I was wearing my scrub top and a scrub jacket and no one had any idea that I wasn't wearing my bra. Still I had that nervous feeling. The bra was stuffed into my purse and I transported it home. I don't know what I was thinking but I attempted to fix the bra. Sadly there was no cure. With a few choice words, I deposited the bra into the trash basket under the bathroom sink.

I went shopping for a replacement. I am a little picky. I hate lace. I don't like seams. I'm sensitive to metal (it makes me itch). I went to Meijer. They had the brand but not the style. I examined every display and all the sale bras but couldn't find a worthy replacement. I tried Target. No luck. K-Mart was a complete bust. (hehe) Anyway I ended up at the mall. Penney's had a comparable bra but it only came in either hot pink, bright red or neon blue and was priced at $47.00. Now I adore a good bra but I'm not paying that much. I just can't. Sears had some on sale but not the kind I wanted. There were some other stores - Victoria's Secret and Macy's which made the prices at Penney's look reasonable. And a couple others that carried what I'd consider novelty bras. Not happening. So I made a special trip to Kohl's to see if I could find a replacement at a reasonable price. I looked and found one very similar to the one I'd tossed but the price on sale was $40. Needless to say I was disappointed. I was carrying around the expensive bra when I stumbled upon the clearance bra rack! Every bra was priced at $14.50. I was excited. I had to look at hundreds well maybe just a hundred, of bras in some wild colors and odd sizes but I found it! It isn't white but then again beige isn't really a weird color. Snatching the beige bra off the rack I held onto it as if it were a wild animal trying to escape. It was a really wonderful find and the original price of $60 made it just that much more special. I am no longer bra-less!

  • Good for you. I hate bra shopping. The only good experience I've had was when I went to Barbara's New Beginnings in Ft. Wayne. I was having back problems so hoped a better bra would help. They have fitting rooms with specialists to help you. They measure, then go in the back to bring out several for you to try. I was really happy with their knowledge and service. But the prices are sky-high. I'm now back to buying locally. One of the ladies at that store told me a bra should be retired when it's 1 year old. Most of mine are extremely elderly! (Like me, ha.)

    • I have never had a bra last longer than 5 years - the elastic always gives out. I guess they don't make anything to really last anymore. There is a place in Grand Rapids, MI that supposedly has really good bras (with expert fitting) at a very reasonable prices... I think it is called MeMe's.

  • Underwear is ridiculously expensive, but so necessary to have the quality and fit. Glad you found what you needed!

    • I'm lucky in that I'm an average and common size. I feel sorry for those women who have to custom order foundation garments because the ones "off the rack" don't come close to fitting!

  • I hate when under wires poke through and bite. I've had that happen a few times. It hurts.
Going bra less may feel comfortable, but it's also awkward and sometimes inappropriately indecent. My mother told me long ago, when I didn't want to trade in t-shirts for a bra in 5th grade, that any young lady who can hold a pencil with her chest Has to don a bra. What an odd measuring factor, but my mother had a bunch of odd ways to discuss delicate subjects.

  • I hate bra shopping. Last time I had to do it, I found a style I liked and bought six of them in various colors. They should last me a few years.

    • Lucky you! I found 2 and bought them but now I only have one left... all my others were single finds. I'm planning to go to the mall and get another pair of shoes just like the ones I have before they disappear!

  • I just had to go bra shopping as well. For my bras, the metal under cup part rips a hole in the side and that is when I know mine have reached their demise. I have never spent $47 on a bra until I went to Lane Bryant. I am glad that you found some affordable ones ,but I am sorry for the loss of yours

    • I have never had a wire break before! I know what you mean about having the wire start to work its way out the end seam... that is always the death knell. I refuse to pay a lot of money - even the expensive ones die at the same rate as the cheap ones!

  • I'm behind as usual. I swear I've been better at keeping up. But this issue hit me big time. Due to shoulders and hands I have to wear a front hook and they don't really support but cover. I have been measured more than once and every time they say I should wear a smaller bra it hurts when hooked and I can't breath. Doesn't help at my age everything tends to sag.

    • I believe in comfort. The new one I bought has a front closure which makes it easier to get on and adjust. However I do agree that the support is less than a regular bra. For me that's not a huge factor but I can sympathize with those women who have been amply blessed...

  • Had to chuckle at this post ~ glad you are all put together again ~ :)

    • I'm always dismayed when I have to go get a new one - they keep changing the styles and it is difficult to find the "perfect" fit.
