Looking Distraught
Just when you give up on a dream something happens to rekindle the hope. Dumbo and I had decided that being partners was good. Being lovers was good and keeping it on the down low was the best of both worlds. We weren’t exactly rolling in clover but life was interesting. Since I wasn’t likely to get a promotion and he wasn’t going anywhere either, we gave up the idea of an engagement and a marriage. That suited me. Then out of nowhere, a ghost materialized. I never mentioned my first marriage to Dumbo since it was so long ago and so short lived that I didn’t really think that dinosaur was relevant. I never thought to ask him if he’d been married before. It was like earthworms coming to the surface after a hard rain. We were back on a semi-normal shift schedule and I had gone to his place for dinner. When I let myself in, Dumbo was sitting on the sofa head in hands. He was distraught. Being the consummate detective I was able to get the whole story. There had been several phone calls from an ex-wife. He confessed he had been married twice and sadly both women had divorced him because of his profession. I wanted to make him feel better so let him in on my little secret. He was slightly relieved but had to give me the rest of the story. He had a daughter and his first wife wanted him to take custody because the new husband wasn’t keen on being a father. I turned on the radio and that Nancy Sinatra song “These Boots Are Made For Walkin” was playing. I thought Dumbo was going to die as the lyrics sank in. I switched it off. We talked until the birds started singing. It was 4:00 AM and we had to be at the precinct in 4 hours. As detectives we are used to short nights and four hours of sleep is plenty. The next day was free of death and after work I started making phone calls. We discussed the situation over beer and pizza and it was settled.
This is the next Det. Evans installment for the August Scavenger Hunt. I used the meditations #11 clover, #22 earth worms, #34 dinosaur, #37 boots, #38 ghosts, and #39 bird. This is harder than it looks and takes longer than I anticipated. A five minute meditation per word can add up and when you accidently fall asleep it takes even longer! Since August is almost over the next installment will be tomorrow...

Settle?!!! Not by a long shot!! Now you've got me sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next chapter,

!!!
You write quite believably.
Ok, now I have to wait 24 hours for the secret to be revealed, dang! Are you sure you weren't a detective in a former life? lol!
So sorry the xangapocalypse prevented the next one from being posted... It will be up tomorrow!
Nicely done!! I was actually believing this one. Thanks for keeping me on the edge of my seat
@ellie1945 - Don't slip off your chair! The next episode is tomorrow!!
@Aloysius_son - Why thank you sir!
@armnatmom - Hehe! I hear that is the case. I know in the past I've had to add disclaimers stating it was fiction...
The fiction you create using your imagination is unbelievably believable! I think you could be a short story mystery writer, if you wanted it badly enough. You have a style and are so good on details that paint the story scenes. Think about it, daughter!
Perhaps once I retire! maybe... I'll consider it.
I've really been enjoying this story series! You've done a great job! Such fun to read!
so I can see what happens!
I'll tune in tomorrow to this station...
HUGS!!!
So sorry that you've had to wait until tomorrow for the last episode. Stay tuned!
"And one of these days, these boots are gonna walk all over you." That's a great song...understandably not for Dumbo.
It is taking me a bit to figure out the reply feature! I'm glad you are enjoying the story - tomorrow is the last episode!
