  • Looking at Pi(e) Day

Today is Pi Day (3.14). For those of you who are not as geeky as I am, the number π (also designated as pi) is a mathematical constant, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, commonly approximated as 3.14159. This decimal representation never ends and never settles into a permanent repeating pattern. When my sons were young they would ask what was for desert. They lived to hear that we were having 3.14159. So I organized a Pi Day celebration as a morale booster for the staff. They are having a tough time and a potluck consisting of all different types of pies seems to be just the ticket on Pi Day. So far (as of Monday night) I have confirmation that staff members will be bringing: a venison pie, a chocolate pie, an apple pie, a banana cream pie, a spinach quiche, an eggnog pie, a chicken pot pie, and a strawberry pie. That is 9/20 of the staff participating. Almost 50% have let me know that they are going to contribute.

I'm going to bake my pie in my special pie plate. I got it just for this occasion. This will be the second time I've used it -

  • That sounds like a great morale booster -- interesting that it didn't become a dessert fest!

    • There were 4 savory pies and about 10 sweet pies. We had a turn out of 11/17 (with 5 people on vacation or out sick)... It was a good time even with a small turnout!

  • Your pi pan is awesome! Pie is my favorite dessert, which is why I don't make it very often. I did make a pork pie with apples and a sage and cheddar crust a couple of weeks ago. It was fabulous!

    • That pork pie does sound tasty! I considered making your Prize-winning Pear Pie but didn't have the special ingredient... I ended up making my Turkey Spam Pot Pie and an Apple Pie with a Twist (orange zest and cranberries) with a crumb topping. It was very good and so popular that there was only one slender slice left.

  • Okay, I couldn't stand it. I just spent an hour in the kitchen making a peach crumble pie. It has about an hour to bake and probably thirty minutes to cool, so you know what I'll be doing around 8:15.

    • Sounds delicious! I'm a sucker for peach pie!! Sadly the store pies are sub par and always a disappointment when compared to a pie made with fresh peaches!!

  • What a good idea to boost morale. I made 2 berry pies for Sun. dinner, and then there were only 3 of us here. Everyone else was either sick or busy. I froze 1 pie, and will
give it to my son when I see him Fri. His son is the one who loves Grandma's pies.

  • I didn't realize the date, despite writing it on a couple letters I wrote today. I usually do try to have pie on pie day. Homemade is best, but since it's late (almost10 pm as I get out of the gym) I think a quick mcd's apple pie will have to do. I'll share iit with Kyle.

  • Love the plate. :) I should have had some pie on pi day. :P

    • I only use that plate once a year... All the rest of the time I use my plain old glass pie plates. As for having some pie - it is never too late to celebrate!

  • @murisopsis: it was, as it was nice and warm, and although I fondly remember the mcd's pies of yesteryear when they were deep fried with a nice bubbly crisp outside, I don't have to worry so much about the calories in today's baked ones.

    • The baked ones are just as high in calories! They took out some of the fat and replaced it with more sugar! I really wanted the strawberry cream pie but it was 310 calories! Even the apple pie is 240... Still the fried pies were better- especially when they were piping hot!
