  • Looking Snacky

I count my calories. I've been able to take off weight and keep it mostly off. (The holidays were rough.) At the end of a particularly tough day when I had 437 calories left in my "bank" I decided to treat myself. My usual snack is Baked Cheese Kurls for 130 calories. When I decide not to have the orange dust on my fingers, I opt for grapes or a banana. But none of those options tickled my fancy. I decided that I wanted something special. I wanted a S'more. For those of you not familiar with this delight, it consists of 2 squares of graham crackers with a quarter of a chocolate bar and a toasted marshmallow smashed between the crackers. The usual method of construction involves a camp fire for roasting the marshmallows. This is essential. The whole point is for the hot marshmallow to flatten and to slightly melt the chocolate. The gooey marshmallow is the glue to hold the graham crackers together when you take your first bite and the cracker, well, it cracks.

There is no camp fire in the vicinity of my kitchen. I do have a gas stove which provides a nice flame. I also possess metal skewers for the grill. Having all the required ingredients lead me to construct this delight.

    The total cost in calories?
    Chocolate - 55 calories
    Marshmallow - 18 calories
    Graham crackers (2) - 70 calories
    Total calories per S'more sandwich = 143
I had 2 of them. The bonus is that there is enough chocolate for 2 more at a future time...

  • That really doesn't sound like too many calories. :D I think marsh, allows are 'lite'? I'm mostly staying away from sugar. That helps me not to crave sugar but Dairy Queen helps me out by having no sugar added Dilly bars. :)

    • Hehe! Yeah, the Dilly bar still has sugar - just no extra sugar. Still as far as a little indulgence goes the Dilly bar is a good one!! I like the butterscotch ones myself.

  • Yay --more food porn! We used to have s'mores as a campfire treat when we were kids, but I haven't had one since!

    • Ditto. They were only for camp outs. But I had the fixings left over from a fire pit get together at saintvi's house... decided I needed to use up the marshmallows before they went stale. It was very tasty!

  • Reminds me of scout camp!

  • I found a recipe for s'mores in a microwave. I tried it. It didn't work. 'Twas a gooey mess!
My oldest and her hubby took me out tonite. I only ordered soup so that I'd have room to try the flan. It came with whipped cream and chocolate sauce on top. Delicious! So I'm not drooling looking at your s'more, which I would usually be doing.

    • I'm drooling at the thought of flan!! My birthday is coming up and I have a recipe for flan - maybe I should try that out as a special treat...

  • You are good! Very good to count your calories and stick with your diet. I am trying to do that too, by keeping it really simple and avoiding too much starch. But the desserts get me. I am exercising too. Have lost some pounds, need to lose about six or seven more, and then I will feel so happy.

    • Thanks! I use MyFitnessPal app on my phone and on the computer. Makes it easy to track and count. I can even track my fiber, cholesterol, sugars, and calcium!

  • I admire your discipline. Looks like you found a sweet way to enjoy a treat without breaking the bank ... so to speak.

    • Hehe! Yeah I'm disciplined but I also let myself splurge now and then... It is all about choices. I can eat 16 cherries, 15 grapes and a banana or I can have a MilkyWay bar. Either way I get to choose. Some days I go for the fruit and other days it is the candy bar.

  • I need to walk my holiday eating off so badly! My intentions are good ~ hopefully, the weight will come off soon ~ ;-/

    • Yep. I'm back on track with my diet - it is hard to get fresh fruit when eating out... Already I'm seeing an improvement!

  • Hershey Nuggets are @ 50 calories each and are SO addictive but do log them in...salt is my enemy....but My Fitness Pal does warn or remind me of my goals and how much sodium I've had. Thanks to you, I am at least trying to be disciplined and have kept the weight fairly steady between 138 and 144....a good program!

    • I've logged in 453 days in a row... It does help to track things. I'm making an effort to increase my fiber and calcium intake.
