Looking at a Long Weekend
This coming weekend is that long awaited Labor Day weekend where we have 3 whole days off work. I am so looking forward to this holiday. It will be a reprieve from the hectic work schedule that included me working this last weekend. It will also be an opportunity to get together with saintvi and do some geocaching. I want to do a little shopping for Christmas gifts since that is coming up in a few months. My plan this year is to get back to the usual schedule of all Christmas shopping being completed by Halloween. This has several benefits:
1. My in laws leave for Arizona at Halloween and I'd like to gift them with their Christmas presents before they leave. Or at least send the wrapped presents with them on their journey.
2. I can take my time wrapping so that it isn't a rushed last minute job.
3. I can enjoy Advent and the house decorating instead of worrying about shopping amid the insanity that is the Holiday Madness.
4. And I will have time to bake - cookies to be precise. I really want to make son#1's favorite mint chocolate chip cookies and make son#2's favorite oatmeal scotchies, and Sparky's favorite low sugar peanut butter cookies. And maybe I'll even have time to make my favorite - pumpkin cookies or raisin spice cookies! So that brings me back to the long Labor Day weekend. It will be half price day at Goodwill and I'm on the hunt for a nice dress to wear at the 40th Anniversary event at Purdue - perhaps something in black and gold? I also have some coupons for Kohl's. When my mother was visiting she expressed her preference for some jewelry they had there. I also need to purchase Sparky's present - he desperately wants a new GPS. His Magellan (I never liked it and it has been a pain since day one) is no longer communicating with his computer or my computer or even the net book. So it is imperative he gets a new one... That said I may have to gift it to him well before Christmas!! So far I have a good start on my sons' gifts and have several other relatives finished. I even have a couple of friends' gifts bought but not wrapped. All the work gifts are already purchased except for the one gift exchange gift... I think this weekend I will be able to make some serious progress. I'm ready! Who needs Black Friday when you have the Labor Day sales??

Wow -- that reminds me of living in HI, where we had two Christmases -- everything for the mainland had to be mailed before Thanksgiving, and local gifts could wait till Christmas! You sound as if you've made good headway already!
I'm getting there - I completely forgot the wedding gift for the big event for Sparky's nephew! That is coming up on the 10th so that gift has to be purchased this weekend!!!
I'm still struggling with birthday presents. We didn't have the annual summer BD party because the family wanted to wait until I was better. So it will be Sept 11 and we'll add the 4 Sept. BD's. I'm giving cash to most everyone since I haven't been able to shop. $10 each to teens and adults, and $5 for kids. There are too many of them for me to give much more. I don't have to buy cards, as my mother has loads of them. I drove for the first time today since May. Went into Winona Lake and found a small present for my mother. She will be 99 Sept. 27, and has requested adults only at her party at the nursing home, and no presents. I got her something anyway. My brother will be coming from Spain for the party.
It looks like you and Vi will have good weather for geocaching.
Money is always welcome. I prefer not giving cash but that is just me!! I am hoping the weather is beautiful for the weekend (extended) as we need to dry out a tad. A Happy 99th Birthday to your mom!!
I guess I should say I'm blessed. Husband and I quit exchanging gifts a long time ago. Daughter really doesn't need a thing as she has a good job an abundance of stuff she has never unpacked in 2yrs. We gift a cooked turkey or two to the church Christmas dinner for the homeless.
Christmas hasn't been the same for us since our son died. Christmas was the last time we saw him.
We have cut way back on the gift giving since all the nieces and nephews have grown up. Sometimes the holidays are sad especially when I think about my dad not being with us but we continue to celebrate the "reason for the season" - Jesus.
