  • Looking Stormy

This last Sunday I had planned to get together with saintvi and go geocaching. She was coming back on Saturday from a week long visit with Waldowalking in Delaware and surrounding environs. When I originally made the plans I was unaware that the annual church picnic/festival was scheduled that same day. One thing led to another and after a flurry of text messages it was decided that we would postpone the geocaching to allow for her recovery from the drive and to allow us to do the picnic without rushing. I was initially disappointed. In the end it was all for the best.

I had to work Saturday and Sunday - granted it was a short time but it took a chunk out of my mornings. On my way into work Sunday, I snapped some photos of the sky. The forecast had been for partly sunny skies and 0% chance of precipitation. My sinuses and hip and shoulders were telling me otherwise. The look of the sky - well, you tell me.

As you can see the sky looked threatening but the sun was shining. An ambiguous situation. I worked, I came home, and we prepared for geocaching and the picnic. We went to the picnic and had a good time. Unfortunately the BINGO game was cut short and the water balloon toss tournament never happened. Instead the food was packed up post haste and every available set of hands were enlisted to take down and load up the tables and chairs. The weather radar showed a strong line of thunderstorms headed directly for Mishawaka. We managed to get to the car before the first wave arrived. During a short reprieve, we found the one and only required geocache for the day. We managed to sign the log and get back to the car before the second and larger storm began to dump torrential buckets of rain. It is a good thing saintvi and I decided to cancel our plans. It would have been fun to sit and chat and hear about her vacation but a disappointment in the geocaching department.
Seems there is a cosmic plan in place and we were wise to listen to that small inner voice!

  • A threatening sky for sure!

I have some geocaching coins son collected, think he bought them on line though. They sure are attractive, even when I have to dust them. :-)

    • The sky had such dark clouds but the sun was shining! It was a strange day... Geocoins are really beautiful and some are quite expensive!!

  • For me, it was more of a loud, screaming, incredulous voice. "WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??? You can't even close your hands halfway... you can barely pick up your keys... you're afraid to close the bathroom door all the way because you can't turn the doorknob. Why do you think you can get in the car and drive to Mishawaka?" I'm really glad I took the chance on that mystery cache in Ohio on Saturday, even though I wasn't sure I had the right coordinates. My hands are much better now. In fact, I'm going to attempt using the weed-eater today. I'll probably mess up my hands again, and definitely my arms, but my yard went from desert to jungle while I was gone and I'm trying to get it in order so Brett won't feel like he has to do it when he's home for one day this weekend.

    • I'm so glad you are feeling better! It seems a shame that Brett only has one day at home. I'm sure you guys have lots to do. Maybe you would like to get together after he leaves (to make the transition to an empty house a little less dramatic)? We don't have any plans for the long weekend... suggest something and we are game!!

  • I like your pictures with the dark clouds contrasting the sunny grass, trees and buildings.

I think I may possibly be in for a few days of very rainy weather, depending on whe TD8 decides to veer.

    • It is the season isn't it? I hope you don't get any really rough weather - I'd be so afraid of hurricanes if I lived on the coast.

  • @saintvi: sorry to hear you are having problems with your hands. Are there any local teens that could help? I know kids in the International Bacclaurette program are required to do so many hours of community service, and I think the scouts are too. If you sign their booklet, this could count, so win win for both of you.

  • @saintvi: Good to know you've been visiting in Delaware -- though I'm concerned about the amount of driving you're doing! Do be safe!

  • Love the photos of impending storm -- our skies are brown with smoke (two new fires in the last 24 hours!). I'm glad you didn't go out for more geocaching -- and glad you didn't drown!

    • We have been under a flood warning for almost 2 weeks now. Every time it rains the rivers go back to flood stage. I'm so happy that our basement has been dry - unlike so many others!! I hope the new fires are contained and you are not at risk. I wish we could give you some of our water!!

  • @murisopsis: The Rey Fire in Santa barbara county is 89% contained, and should be out by tomorrow. The other two will not be as huge, but are still burning!

  • It's a little unpredictable. Yesterday I was stranded in the barn by a sudden downpour. It didn't last long. The grass is growing like weeds. Good for the animals but work for the mowers. :)

    • The grass is getting long but Sparky is avoiding mowing due to the mosquitoes. He went out to pick tomatoes. Got 5 tomatoes and 5 mosquito bites.

  • One of my students told me there had been a tornado, somewhere in Indiana, the same day as the Italian earthquake. I'm not surprised, given the appearance of the sky.

    • We had 5 tornadoes in Northern Indiana in 24 hours. There were no fatalities but plenty of damage mostly from the high winds and not from the actual touchdown of the funnels... we got off easy.

  • Looks like a perfect setup for a rainbow!

    • I didn't see one but some of my friends reported that there were several. Thought they were rather weak and very faint in the photos.
