Looking for Pi(e)
Today, as most of my nerdy friends know, is Pi Day. We have celebrated Pi Day in this household for many years. It requires at least one meal to consist of pies. This year is special and important because Pi (3.14159) Day falls on 3.14.15. We are travelling today but that will not stop us from eating pie - even if we have to eat McDonald's cherry pies. I did however celebrate Pi Day at work on Thursday. I organized the luncheon and we had meat pies, cheese pies, and egg pies. We also had contributions of dessert pies, and several (4) pizza pies contributed by the lazy among us. The highlights were the following:
The Turkey Spam Pot Pie. Yes, I made it and yes, it was good. Even had one person ask for the recipe. I didn't tell them it was turkey spam and they loved it but wanted to know how I got the turkey chunks so uniformly cubed...
The mac and cheese pie with the bacon lattice top. This was actually very good but the bacon didn't get done on top - because she used the premium thick cut stuff instead of the paper thin cheap bacon! So we picked the top off and ate the pie! It got a A+ on taste.
The Barbecue Beef Hand Pies. These were very handy since you could hold them and nibble while waiting in line to get some of the other pies. The gentleman who made these (from my recipe) did a great job and they tasted delicious.
The Shepherd's Pies. Yes there were 2 of them. They were different and yet the same. I apologize for the photo quality but by the time I was taking the picture people were crowding in to get a preview of the pies...
There was the Salmon Pie in a Rice Crust. This was a nod to some of the folks who are attempting a pseudo "paleo" diet and the gluten free crowd. I had some because I can't resist fish anything. It was fishy (as expected) and gets a B+ from me. This was Elmer Fudd's contribution because his wife is allergic to onion so he hadn't been able to make it for consumption at home... We were his excuse to make it. I think he had 2 pieces.
There were two crustless quiches. This one was the Quiche Florentine with lots of red and yellow bell peppers, mushrooms, onion, ham, and of course the thing that makes it Florentine - spinach. The other (not pictured) was a crustless Quiche Lorraine.
Because it wouldn't be a real celebration without desserts, I present the sweet pies!
The pecan pie - homemade and just as rich as it is supposed to be!
The Banana Pudding Pie. This one was not a very attractive pie but it stands as the only banana pie I've ever tasted that I've liked. Probably because it was made with vanilla pudding (not the gross fake banana flavored stuff) and with fresh bananas that were not so far gone as to be good only for banana bread!
The Chocolate Pie - one of the few homemade pies. This was pretty and the chocolate filling was very rich. Made from scratch and not chocolate filling from a can or pudding mix. Yum.
Sadly, I didn't get a photo of the other homemade pie, a delicious lemon and blueberry pie with a meringue top. By the time I made it to that end of the table it had been sliced up and several pieces removed. In addition we had store bought key lime pie, cherry pie, and an apple pie. Needless to say there were some leftovers - mostly the Little Ceasar's pizza and the store pies. Go figure - The staff actually prefer homemade! All in all a fun and tasty time. I was even thanked!
On Thursday I baked 4 more pies to take to a retreat - 2 turkey pot pies and 2 quiches (with crust since I'm a traditionalist that way). We dropped them off on our way out of town yesterday. I considered taking photos but decided you've seen enough pi for one day!!

Happy Pi day, and safe travels.
I love that there was such variety.
It sounds like your early Pi event was both fun and yummy.
It was a great event and very filling!
What a fun event! What a variety of pies -- they all look delicious, and I'm glad the homemade ones were preferred!
I was a tad disappointed that some folks didn't even attempt a homemade pie and just bought one.... Homemade is always better!
ok. I've now had some apple pie today. (just the insides) I think I'd like Turkey pot pie for dinner.
Apple is a favorite of mine. I have a recipe for a crustless french apple pie that is delicious!!
I read this, as I am fasting during the daylight hours- and vow to do Pi Day justice, this evening!
I hope you were able to have a big slice of your favorite flavor - maybe with a little ice cream!
Some seem to unusual for me. I like traditional. lol
I am surprised at how many things they made that are called Pi (pie?)
All of these were traditional! Hehe! They made meat pies long before they decided to put fruit in them!
I totally spaced out that you asked me for meat pie recipes! D'oh! All I have is a chicken pot pie recipe anyway. That's not counting my shepherd's pie recipe, which I never really think of as a pie. I've been looking at recipes for pasties and I may try some out for next year. I had a slice of Strawberry Rhubarb Pie tonight. Yum!
Ah! Strawberry - Rhubarb pie. That is a classic combination that too few people appreciate!
Neat! I could go for that pecan pie.
The pecan pie was very good. It got my vote as best dessert pie.
I become a big sinner at reading your descriptionS and at seeing your delightfuL pies! It is true BUT i AM FORGIVEN BECAUSE it was mid-lent!
About Shepherd pie some people in Ontario waNted me to learn the making . It was in 2001. I forgiot all of the recipe but I remember the name and the meory it was good!:)
Love
Michel
Have you given up sweets for Lent? We had our celebration on Thursday so that we could all eat the meat pies! If you want a recipe for Shepherd's pie I can send you one!
Dang, I missed Pi day! Probably just as well because "I can resist everything but temptation".
Pi day was yummy. We might have to repeat it at work in a few years (maybe when it falls on a Wednesday). There were several places that featured a pi day special!
