A Look at New Words

I never know what I'll learn on any given day. It could be a tidbit of knowledge about the universe or a new slang term. This week it was both. The cosmos was the discussion among some physicists that were assisting a researcher with some lasers. I had never heard some of the terms and was struggling to figure out what they were talking about. It took some concentration but figured out they were discussing fermions, tachyons, and branes. Sometimes I swear that physicists make up words just to make themselves seem smarter. Add some heavy slavic accents on top of it and you can appreciate my confusion. I made their day by trying to understand and asking questions - or maybe I was the only non-relative female to interact with them in the last decade. Either way they were kind and very eager to explain everything to me. The TV show "The Big Bang Theory" surely is drawn from real life. Ivan (pronounced EEEE -von) gave me his card and told me I could call him anytime if I wanted to discuss string theory. That call is not going to happen.

The new slang term was cankle. I had never heard it before. A coworker stated that her fiance had told her that if she ever developed cankles he was "out of here". It sounded like some sort of skin condition or infection but I was wrong. (I'm betting all of you knew what this meant and I was the only person on the planet in the dark.) So after laughing at me, the meaning was divulged. Really?! It is an obese or otherwise swollen ankle that blends into the calf without clear demarcation. Hoping my sister doesn't take offense but she was born with cankles. Unfortunately, she didn't take advantage of her physical attributes and become a figure skater or a hockey player. I even asked son#2 about cankles. Of course he knew exactly what they were - launching into a description of a SNL skit about Monica Lewinsky. This is all Xanga's fault. If I wasn't on xanga all the time I would have been watching SNL and Mad TV and known all about cankles...

cankles are the bane of the american female's psyche.

and I never heard of cankles before this post, so we are in the same boat, I guess ... that being that we spend so much time on xanga and not watching SNL.

: )

@BianchiStreet - Thank-you! For the bright sunshine mini, the rec and for admitting you didn't know either... I feel less alone.

@Vignettery - Thanks for recommending this and the sunny mini! Don't fall off your chair... and stop pointing I feel silly enough. Here I am the ultimate nerd pin up. I post about computers, string theory and cankles - no wonder Ivan wants me to call him! yeesh!

@speraquodvereor - Thanks for the rec. Guess you are now a member of the "I Xanga Instead of Watching TV" Club. Prerequisite - don't know what cankles are. Since I had never heard of them, my youth was not spent in worry over the possibility! I feel so much better.

Now I learned two new things this week: Don't talk to slavic physisicists about ANYTHING and cankles aren't attractive to some men. I can go back to bed now. :) Happy Saturday!

@royal_diadem - I never caught that... Probably cause I don't watch Fox. Please do look up the others so I won't be the only woman to know the terms. LQTM.

@AnamcharaConcepts - Hehehe. They were so... lonely. I'm sure they will have *cough* pleasant dreams of our conversation. Somehow I doubt most men make it to the ankles...hehehe.

My daughter educated me about cankles. I never knew there was a slang term for thick ankles before she told me. Cankle means that the calf flows right into the ankle with no obvious definition and combines both words, calf and ankle. See, you learn something new every day, even if it is trivial! hehe

@kunhuo42 - Sometimes I wish mine wasn't so "educational", Ha!

@WakeUpLaughing - Now that I know about them I'm seeing them everywhere... arrgghh! I don't want to ask why your daughter thought you needed to know about cankles! Have a good weekend!

@murisopsis - if you're concerned about me having cankles, that's not the case! I have nice slim ankles! haha! She and I were out one day and she pointed out a woman with cankles. I thought the same thing you did...I was looking around for someone with a skin condition or something. Now I see them everywhere too!

I only know about cankles because I get them when I'm traveling.

I love learning knew words, but slowly, so I can soak in the meaning and savor the sound of it rolling off my tongue.

I forget how I knew about cankles, but I HAD forgotten about them until I read this post. :p Hilarious. So who decides at what point the swollen ankles become cankles?

The only time I've ever had a cankle was when my ankle was sprained. That's a sprainkle.

I might have had those when I was pregnant.  Isn't it interesting the things we retain in a week?  I think physicist might do well with more fresh air and Xanga is a fabulous place to miss TV shows.

yeah, I knew what they were .  . . . a girlfriend confessed she had them, and showed me. I didn't think it was a condition that warrented the need of its own word, but whatever.

@Dezinerdreams - I aim to amuse! Glad you were.

@ANVRSADDAY - Hehehehe. You are so funny! I'm sure none of the women at your house have cankles.

@windupherskirt - That was my first impression too but no relationship... but you made me smirk!

@WakeUpLaughing - I'm sorry if I implied you did. Also sad to hear that the condition has spread north and there is an epidemic there as well as here. I wonder if the cankle is an indicator for predisposition to zombieism?

@saintvi - Oh no - not cankles! At least yours go away. Some of the ones I've seen look permanent.

@SecretNeverTold - I, I don't know. Hmm. Maybe there is some medical criteria... perhaps there are chronic cankles and acute cankles? Though according to my son cankles are never cute...

@joyouswind - AHAHAHA! * Gasp*!!! You win. I'm so tickled with the idea of sprainkles that it will be jotted in my word list!

@Jaynebug - I have to agree that the physicists needed more exposure to sunlight and fresh air (and maybe need to widen their circle of friends). I don't miss TV as my Xanga addiction increases. Pregnancy produces prankles - except the joke is on the mother to be!

@jacksoncroons - If there is something in this world that doesn't have a name someone will give it one...
